  • Challenges

External storage devices have hidden risks

As a stage photographer, he constantly travels across the world. A shooting trip might take up several months, so Li Lewei has to prepare a lot of mobile storage devices and plenty of hard disk space before each departure. Not only does the average footage from a concert require over 100GB space, additional space is required for backup. In the past eight years, nearly 100TB of footage has been generated. The charm of stage photography is that it can't be reproduced, everything is one-time-only and unique. As a witness of music trends and music's transcending moments and with inborn love for music, Li Lewei always takes extra care to backup the footage after each shooting. Although time consuming, it is a lesson well learned by Li Lewei after a mobile hard disk failure.

Public cloud services can often be cumbersome and comes with privacy issues

Li Lewei has considered storing data in public cloud storage spaces, but found that it is time consuming and cumbersome in file uploading and downloading. In addition, his photo editing software is also not well connected. Moreover, footage from events has various copyright and reproduction concerns that raises issues when storing them on public cloud services.

Solution

Considering the particulars of stage photography and the possible issues for Li Lewei's work, QNAP have provided a suitable storage solution. He uses a QNAP TS-451+ with four 8TB WD Red NAS drives to provide immense storage capacity and reliability. QNAP's myQNAPcloud service provides a stable hybrid cloud storage solution that solves Li Lewei's access problems in long trips, allowing him to access saved footage anytime, anywhere. A RAID 5 hard disk configuration doubles data security while Hybrid Backup Sync provides multiple automated backup functions to eliminate the need for manual backup. The TS-451+ frees Li Lewei from any worries, so that he can devote himself to stage photography.

  • QVPN service makes remote access easier

QNAP provides a convenient remote access management mechanism, but Li Lewei is used to managing photos and files using Adobe Lightroom. QNAP can also satisfy these creative requirements. Just download and install the QVPN service and the complex external network environment instantly becomes a "dedicated line." For every field trip, if he wants to use a PC for photo editing, he only needs to access the VPN to use NAS-based assets as if he were using a local network environment.

  • FTP file transfer server for instant footage uploading

Stage photography often has unexpected moments. Fortunately, QNAP NAS supports FTP file uploading. Once the camera settings are completed, photos can be instantly uploaded to the remote NAS via wireless network. At the moment Li Lewei pressed the shutter, QNAP NAS has started to protect each unique moment.

  • RAID 5 with WD Red NAS dedicated drives for increased security and reliability

Li Lewei required a storage solution that meets his passion for his work. Li Lewei cherishes every unique moment captured by his camera. Therefore, Li Lewei unhesitatingly chose a RAID 5 disk configuration to greatly reduce the risk of data loss. His usage of WD Red NAS dedicated drives also ensures 24/7 quiet operations without downtime and has effective heat dissipation. The storage space of the TS-451+ can also be expanded by using USB-based expansion enclosures.

Results

The QNAP TS-451+ features immense storage potential to meet both today and tomorrow's requirements. The easy and intuitive QTS system has rich application functions to meet Li Lewei's needs for photo creation and editing.
